Brisbane the wait is over! Hedwig and the Angry Inch is finally rocking into QPAC!

Hedwig and the Angry Inch opened in 2006 in Sydney to thunderous applause and critical acclaim, the show then swept the national theatre awards winning a Helpmann Award, two Green Room Awards, and two Sydney Critic Awards. The show originated from New York where it played for over 3 years, it has played to great acclaim all over the world since and has been turned into an award winning feature film.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch, proudly part of the Brisbane Cabaret Festival, tells the story of Hedwig Schmidt, played by Michael Falzon (star of the hit musical 'We Will Rock You'), the unfortunate victim of a gruesomely botched sexchange operation, and an "internationally ignored song-stylist". Her journey to find true love, "her other half", is a rock and roll odyssey which leads her across the Berlin Wall, across the world and from man to woman.

The Producer of Hedwig & the Angry Inch, David Hawkins, today announced the casting of a new Hedwig for the upcoming Australian tour. Michael Falzon, last seen in We Will Rock You and War of the Worlds will perform the role of the Punk Rock glamazon transvestite, Hedwig.

As a result of this change and due to a more hectic rehearsal schedule, the Producers have had to move the Metro Theatre dates to November 18th.

Patrons choosing to hold over their tickets until the November shows will receive 1 free ticket per booking.

Patrons who wish to get a refund must contact the Metro Theatre as soon as possible on 02 9550 3666

Michael Falzon steps into the role after spending the last 6 months in London working with his own production company, SMA Productions. Best known for his lead role in the rock epic, We Will Rock You, Michael received both Helpmann and Mo Award nominations for his role as Galileo.

Producer, David Hawkins said today “While we are, of course, very disappointed that we have had to recast the role of Hedwig, finding a leading man like Michael Falzon who’s able to play this role is incredibly exciting.

‘Hedwig is a true Rock Star role and Michael’s prodigious talent and his previous turn in We Will Rock You, makes him perfect for the role.’

‘His extensive musical theatre and production background also means he’ll be able to step up to the role of Hedwig with ease.’

HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH tells the story of Hedwig Schmidt, the unfortunate victim of a gruesomely botched sex-change operation, and an “internationally ignored song-stylist”. Her journey to find true love, “her other half”, is a rock and roll odyssey which leads her across the Berlin Wall, across the world, and from man to woman.

LUCINDA SHAW, most recently wowing audiences as the Lady of the Lake in Spamalot, will take on the role of trusty Man Friday, Yitzhak.

The left-of-centre off-Broadway production, with text by John Cameron Mitchell and music and lyrics by Stephen Trask, opened at New York’s Jane Street Theatre in 1998. Gradually, the show became a cult hit. Like The Rocky Horror Picture Show, it’s the kind of production that fanatics boast of seeing 100, 200, even 400 times.

Produced by David Hawkins, directed by Craig Ilott, choreography by Kelley Abbey, and musical direction by Tina Harris, the creative team bringing the Deutsch Diva to life are passionately connected to Hedwig.

“Let’s cut to the chase. Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the most exciting piece of music theatre to hit Sydney in years” The Sun Herald

“The first rock musical that truly rocks” Rolling Stone Magazine

Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Michael Falzone (sic) stars in Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Michael Falzon is a legend.

Anyone who can play the role of Galileo in We Will Rock You automatically achieves “very talented performer” status in my mind.

Anyone who can back up that role with something as challenging as the part of Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch deserves the praise of being called a legend.

One hour and 29 minutes of full-on, hard-rocking, gut-wrenching performance. In heels and a frock.

This isn’t Priscilla. It’s darker, it’s nastier, it’s harder, it’s better.

Hedwig Schmidt is the victim of a botched sex change operation and an internationally ignored song stylist as she travels the globe telling her story and mourning an unrequited love, but this show is so much more.

Many would argue that a production like this belongs in an underground theatre, seen only by those who are slightly left of centre. The subject matter alone is enough to turn most people off; a man dressed as a woman singing about a botched sex change.

So why go and see this show?

If you love live performance of any kind, this show is going to work for you. There is a live five-piece rock band right there on stage, rocking out each song as if they are playing in the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

Then there is Lucinda Shaw, introduced to Australian audiences in the role of The Lady in the Lake in Monty Python’s Spamalot. Queensland missed out on the opportunity to revel in her incredible talent. But now, fortunately, we have the chance. Lucinda’s performance during the show as Hedwig’s trusty Man Friday “through Thursday”, Yitzhak, is sensational and her amazing vocal ability will leave you wondering why we have never seen her before.

Then there is Michael Falzon. He pretty much does this show on his own.

Everything else fades into the background as he absolutely owns the role, the stage, the music and the audience (he particularly owned the audience when he ventured into the stalls to give the person next to me a lap dance).

His vocal prowess is second to none and his characterisation of the role is ingenious. He is truly an amazing performer.

The show itself has something for everyone.

If you hate music theatre, you will love this show because it is more like an intimate rock concert or a hard rocking cabaret show than a musical. The songs themselves seem to belong on a rock album rather than a show soundtrack.

If you love music theatre, then you will love this for its storytelling through music and the profound abilities of the performers.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch was a phenomenal success in Sydney and Melbourne and, with Michael Falzon in the role of Hedwig, it has the potential to be even more successful here.

Get a ticket. It will be an experience you’ll never forget.

In 20 years, when Hedwig is the cult success of Rocky Horror, don’t be the person left saying, “I should have seen that.”

Hedwig and the Angry Inch is playing a very limited season at the Cremorne Theatre, QPAC, until November 2. Tickets are available through QTIX on 136 246 or qtix.com.au

Hedwig Opens in Brisbane

Hedwig opened at QPAC last Friday to a standing ovation and sensational reviews, MICHAEL FALZON has taken the role in both hands and made it his own he is really something.  There is a level of stillness in his acting that just enlightens the sensitivity of this most strange and exotic character.  To have that amazing voice on those songs also is an absolute joy, I am very very proud of this NEW version of HEDWIG.  Lucinda Shaw is just stunning in her portrayal of Yitzhak, bringing to that role a voice of gold and velvet, and an acting presence that captivates and intrigues the audience.  The electric bond between Michael and Lucinda from their history of performing with each other adds a element to the tension that is unique and diverse.  Here are some highlights of the rave reviews below.

“One rarely has the opportunity to witness theatrical magic, but when the chance comes along it must be embraced at all costs. Hedwig and the Angry Inch is one such opportunity.. Falzon is absolute perfection in his portrayal of the troubled singer, capturing beautifully Hedwig’s need to find her other half. His singing voice is sublime but it really comes in second to his incredible acting ability – he expertly navigates the moments of stillness and draws optimum laughs from the comedy. It is difficult to imagine anyone else playing this role with the same balance of honesty and utter showmanship.” TIME OFF, BRISBANE

“The show’s cult leanings and the star’s knock-‘em-dead ranting and raving, made us hardly game to blink” SUNDAY MAIL, BRISBANE

“Falzon fumed and ripped into his story..a convincing rock belter” COURIER MAIL, BRISBANE

“Quite simply, Hedwig rocks the house. Such is the spine-tingling force of the aural, the jarring assault of the visual, Brisbane's intimate Cremorne Theatre was simply not designed to withstand this... Michael Falzon’s miraculous Hedwig is exhilarating and exhausting.” AUSTRALIAN STAGE
